RSPB - DEWATERING
PROJECT DETAILS
Project Name: The RSPB
Project Type: General Dewatering
Location: Blean Woods Reserve, Whitstable, Kent
BACKGROUND
As part of the management of Seasalter Levels on the Kent coast we have created new scrapes and rills across 228 hectares of wet grassland nature reserve. The aim being to restore habitat that will support populations of breeding wading birds, such as Lapwing and Redshank. To encourage these ground-nesting birds onto the reserve, we flood the fields to create shallow pools and muddy areas that provide the right kind of feeding conditions for chicks to forage for insects. This means we have to pump a large amount of water from our extensive ditch system on to these fields.
Prior to the creation of these new wet features we were using smaller trash pumps to move water, but through grant funding via the Green Recovery Challenge Fund we have been able to invest in pumps that are capable of moving the amount of water we need to flood such an extensive area.
OBJECTIVE
SPP Pumps was contacted to provide a better dewatering solution than the small trash pumps currently being used, selecting and offering pumps capable of moving the amount of water we needed to flood such an extensive area. As well as pumping capabilities the pumps had to be robust yet versatile and mobile.
SOLUTION
Speaking with the customer and studying the application, SPP selected 4 x QYV100M RT/FH, a 100mm (4)” high performance self- priming pump, fitted with a Yanmar 4TNV88-C emissions compliant stageV engine, supplied on an approved fixed height road trailer with autostart control panel functions.
The order was placed, and when delivered SPP helped commission the pumps and provided on site traing to the RSPB team, the pumps are now happily out working Seasalter Levels on the Kent coast.
