GATHERLEY - WATER
PROJECT DETAILS
Project Name: Gatherley Pumping Station
Project Type: River Water Transfer Pumps
Pumps/pump Package Used: x4 horizontally mounted BT10DL pumps fitted to 630kW 4p 690V motors
Location: Devon, United Kingdom
BACKGROUND
Drinking water in the South West is mainly taken out of rivers and 23 reservoirs under South West Waters network area. A lot of these reservoirs are small, serving local catchments, and are supported by the three larger ‘strategic’ reservoirs – Colliford, Roadford and Wimbleball.
Water from these three strategic reservoirs is shared between several smaller reservoirs, which is why maintaining Colliford, Roadford and Wimbleball water levels is so important.
OBJECTIVE
South West Water has invested in a new pumping station on the River Tamar. This new station will abstract water from the Tamar and pump this to Roadford reservoir, maintaining the reservoir level to handle increased demand during summer. Once completed the scheme plans to provide Roadford Reservoir with an impressive 111ML/D.
SPP’s client required a short lead time temporary solution followed by the delivery of a permanent pump design and supply.

SOLUTION
SPP secured the order for a temporary pump solution in 2023. This was for two TR20TL horizontally mounted split case pump sets coupled to 355kW drivers. These were taken on a very short 12-week lead time (for packages of this size). This order required a high amount of input and tight management from various departments through the project. SPP delivered these units on time which is a great testament to SPP’s capabilities to deliver on our various clients’ specific needs and demands.
The success of the temporary pumps order put SPP in a great position for the permanent pumps tender. SPP worked hard to find a solution to a new and challenging design scenario. This required four pumps in parallel with two running fixed speed and two running variable speed to meet various duty requirements and site limitations. The support and flexibility offered at the design and tender stage ensured SPP were the chosen supplier by the end users’ contractor.
The permanent pump set supply involves delivering x4 horizontally mounted BT10DL split case pump set packages with 630kW 690V motors to fully meet the client and end users specification and the specific application requirements. These units will be fully tested on our in-house test well.
